Description

An overlooked, but crucial, element of architecture is the door. Every day we encounter different kinds of doors, whether it is in public or private spaces. The same door is touched by countless of people, whom we are not aware of what they have touched, easily making the door a place for germ transmission. Afraid of direct contact with germs, these days we see people opening doors using other parts of their body, which led to the main inspiration of this project. If the end of the pandemic is not in a foreseeable future, or if the present attitude towards touching public surfaces is permanent, how can doors adapt to the new human needs? This project explores the functionality of doors and how people interact with them. The result is a manual of doors containing solutions which support the changing behavioral attitudes, relating to the use of hands to open doors.
