Description

Kowloon Walled City was once the most densely populated place on earth. Due to the political situation after the WW2, this place remained ungoverned for over 40 years and was home for many illegal medical practitioners immigrated from China. Inside this cramped 100 x 200 metres site, there was once around 150 dental practitioners working inside and was a famous destination for cheap medical appointments until being demolished in 1994. Despite the success, not many were documented and remained mysterious. With the poor conditions in the city, how did the practitioners grew their businesses so successfully? How did they adapted to the limited space? In this historical narrative project, five clinics will be analysed and interpreted to tell the stories that might have happened inside the lost space. This aims to archive and respond to the scattered pieces of history and reimagining the dimensions of life of the Kowloon Walled City residents with spatial design.
