A Placemaking Experiment On A Public Stairway Landing In Kwun Tong

Stairs around our city forms complex linkages in our daily life; yet not many citizens recognise that staircases are public space with multifunctional potentials. This project conducts a placemaking experiment at one particular 80-meter-long staircase in Kwun Tong and explores the shaping of civic consciousness by constructing a platform for community engagement. Under regular field observations, interventions were made at different stages by placing some plastic stools, a handmade wooden bench (for resting), interactive posters (for opinion sharing) and a cabinet (for material sharing) on the stair landing space, allowing different levels of actions and interactions to take place among the staircase users. During the process, the users appear to develop a sense of communal ownership. This project demonstrates how sociality could be concretely designed on an ordinary stairway with careful and small-scale interventions.

城市中的樓梯，看似平常卻貫穿、連結我們的日常生活，然而並沒有多少人意識到樓梯空間是一個充滿潛力的公共空間。因此，我嘗試在一條觀塘的長樓梯空間，期望透過社區營造實驗，巧妙地利用公共空間之餘連結社區。整個實驗包括三個階段，分別透過放置長凳創造休憩空間；創作互動海報收集意見；放置共享櫃創造分享平台，讓街坊們一起透過不同程度的小行動去塑造本應屬於自己的社區空間，同時希望給予大眾想像社區空間的可能性。
