Green Employee; Gamified eco-sustainability training for hotels

Hotel sector needs to cut its carbon footprint by 90% by 2050 to meet the 2 degree climate change threshold agreed upon in Paris Agreement. Employee training matters. Raising environmental awareness amongst catering employees for instance, energy usage in catering could be reduced by up to 30%. 43 million tourists worldwide consider themselves to be ecotourists, going green counts. It was proven that environmental information in a game can change people’s behaviour towards energy saving significantly.

We would like to propose a new environmental sustainability education tool; an online game. Being an online tool, it can be played anytime within a period of time set by the manager of the hotel - not taking up time from the in-house employee training. Gamifying the learning process makes it more engaging. Covering all departments of the hotel, the game presents employees with the real-life environmental impact of their actions, which helps to connect it to their lives and therefore to support learning and behavioural changes. Moreover the manager can see employee’s accessing and playing the game, keep a log with observed changes in their behaviour and employees themselves can see each other’s score which helps to motivate them through competition.

Introducing a new tool; an online game helping companies hotels to educate their employees about more sustainable behaviour in the workspace.

Why? Hotel sector alone needs to cut its carbon footprint by 90% by 2050 to meet the 2 degree climate change threshold agreed upon in Paris Agreement. Employee training matters. Raising environmental awareness amongst catering employees for instance, catering energy usage could be reduced by up to 30%. Furthermore, 43 million tourists worldwide consider themselves to be ecotourists, going green counts.

Various psychological studies proved that games influence people’s behaviour. A 2015 study showed, that environmental information in particular embedded in a game can change people’s behaviour towards energy saving significantly.

Using this pattern to help to train hospitality workers to treat resources in the hotel in more sustainable and responsible way, works towards the goal of producing less pollution while saving hotel's money. Gamifying the training process makes it more engaging and helps increasing retention rates, while making it accessible online cuts time from in-house employee training.
