NOT YET: Back to the future past of handicraft 未末: 回到工藝未來昔日

Since mid-20th century, Hong Kong has had some major social transformation. The evolution and develop has since been marvelously quick.

In the age of information technology, people demand speed and efficiency.

It could be the excessively fast-paced life, or the dependency on computers and machines, they seem to have forgotten the beauty of handcraft. Amidst the hustle and bustle, new buildings are being erected while shops of traditional crafts are vanishing. Traditional crafts diminish not only because of the rapid social development, the dramatic change of needs and the rise of rent, but also the inherent hardship in learning the crafts that the younger generations are not prone to carry on the legacy.

What is being lost is not merely the “street smart” craftsmanship, it is the memory of the time and warmth in traditional handcraft… Hong Kongese
vernacular traditional handcrafts like paper battening, embroidered shoes and White Iron witnessed the history of the city: the trace of life and the most bosom signs of the times.

香港自上世紀中期起，社會急速發展，經歷多番轉型，轉變飛快。

在現今資訊科技發達的時代下，人人講求速度和效率，也許是生活節奏過於急速，或是過份依賴電腦化和機械化，人們似乎遺忘了手造的美好。在繁華的都市中，嶄新的建築一棟棟建成，傳統手工藝老店卻一個個消失。傳統手工藝之所以式微，除了因為社會急速發展、需求改變，店舖租金的飛漲，還有年輕一代不願意接手，或是學藝辛苦難以堅持等。

然而，漸漸消逝的不止是街巷的工藝，還有時代的記憶，傳統的情懷……香港的傳統手工藝，如紙紮、繡花鞋、白鐵等，見證了香港一路走來的歷程，它是香港人最確實的生活痕跡，亦是香港人最親切的集體回憶、時代印記。

這些印記最終是留下或是歸去，還有待時間證明。今天，就讓我們踏出多一步，重新認識傳統手工藝，或許這樣，香港就會有一個不一樣的未來。
