Description

Based on cities being living organisms, the author looked at the Shenzhen-Hong Kong border by comparing it to the connective area between two adjoining biological organs, and the cross-border human and material flow to cells and nutrient transport. Just as in an organism, tissue fluids flow from areas of excessive pressure to areas of lower pressure to achieve equilibrium, while for a city, population tends to migrate to safer, more developed areas. Unrestricted human flow, like the excessive discharge of intracellular fluids from one cell to another, can cause cell death, thus legitimizing today's border control.
In the context of HK's integration into the Greater Bay Area, how Shenzhen and HK can deepen cooperation through "One Country, Two Systems", while retaining and developing their own inherent identity and values nonconflictedly, demands subversive institutional innovation. The biology of cell fusion will hopefully shed light on new possibilities for future urban integration.
