Description

When creating products for visually impaired individuals, their emotional needs are often overlooked. Research has shown that having a companion can help reduce negative emotions. Hence, companionship could be considered a factor in raising a pet or guide dog. Unfortunately, Hong Kong has a shortage of guide dogs, with a ratio lower than recommended; 1:100.

MAGAMATE is a handheld device designed to help visually impaired individuals in Hong Kong and beyond, by providing them with a reliable companion to enhance their independence and quality of life. Its name comes from a type of Japanese jewellery and reflects its function as a guide. While it is not intended to replace guide dogs, MAGAMATE can serve as a temporary substitute for those who don't have access to one. By using MAGAMATE, visually impaired individuals can easily navigate their environment and perform daily tasks, ultimately leading to a better quality of life.
