Description

Chungking Mansions, a building complex of five blocks of seventeen floors which opened in 1961, housing, small hotels, shops and businesses, wholesalers and restaurants is a witness of Hong Kong’s changes through more than five decades in use. From high-end retailers to trade markets and places of notorious crime scenes, it has become a multicultural environment of exchange, socially and commercially, attracting countless people to experience its unique atmosphere. However, the outbreak of the pandemic has impacted our way of living in the city where the restriction of social distancing has become the new normal. Thus, many of the small enterprises are faced with the after effects of the post-pandemic, struggling for their existence. The project speculates on the future of Chungking Mansions as a place of commerce through spatial transformation, proposing design systems to accommodate temporary and adaptable layouts for unforeseen external events affecting our communal environment.
