Description

“I have three friends who are transgender. Two of them killed themselves. The bereaved families of the two friends did not even hold a funeral, saying that they are dirty, and only their friends gathered to hold a funeral. This is the reality for transgender people living in Korea" says a Twitter user. Nobody deserves to be the victim of abusive speech, yet much verbal violence on social media exists in the social blind spot, escaping the attention it deserves. The plethora of posts on social media consisting of abusive language directed at minority groups are not only toxic towards the targeted subjects but has a magnified harmful effect on the real world. This project focuses on abusive language used on Korean Twitter in discussions of transgender issues and calls for appropriate action to stop the abuse. It is intentionally designed to make you feel uncomfortable. I hope you take this unpleasant feeling as an invitation to human rights studies and action.
