Description

During the pandemic, children with intellectual disabilities (ID) face the crisis of getting mental and physical illness due to not meeting their parents, and family members face to face. Although ID children may not well-perform in socialization, they can still feel and understand the same emotion as every one of us. The pandemic situation limits the communication between them and their family, leading to depression and related health problems. To help reduce this problem, the social robot HUGHUG will provide a unique visual and verbal communication experience and send an actual hug. The HUGHUG robot has two long robotic arms that can allow hugging, petting and sweeping with the soft and cute looking. Two robots can facilitate two-way communication; for instance, once the parent hugs robot A and activates the sensors, robot B owned by the children in another remote area, will embrace the children. Connecting people with tangible experience is essential and unique in the social distancing scenario. Meanwhile, the mobile app of HUGHUG can support video call and real-time communication. During the chat of the ID children and parents, they can use body language and facial expression to communicate, which would be easier for the ID children to understand.
