Description

Public spaces has always been a shortage in Hong Kong, especially Privately-owned Public spaces(POPS) in malls. Managing Public spaces are seen by malls as a problem with low commercial benefit. Most malls adopt the management model of bundling social interaction with consumption as to promote flow and spending, reducing/keeping POPS idle in tandem. Visitors have expectations of having a good time interacting with their companions, where they are unsatisfied and tired by currently cookie-cut style malls that “forces” consumption with social interaction. The current misuse of POPS by malls further worsens the experience , thus making the mall becoming less and less attractive to potential visitors. Through deploying SCALE, Malls can easily transform their idle public spaces to attractive resting spots through providing versatile seating/shading modules, while still maintaining the spatial flexibility needs of malls.
