Description

During the second World War the Japanese army occupied Hong Kong, after which Sham Shui Po became a concentration camp. After the War ended in 1945, the population of Hong Kong began to increase. After 1949, many immigrants entered Hong Kong from Mainland China. Hong Kong’s population dramatically increased, often in informal settlements. At the end of 1953, a disastrous fire broke out in Shek Kip Mei, one of the largest squatter area, destroying over 2,000 houses. The government responded by constructing the Shek Kip Mei Estate, one of the first public housing programmes in Hong Kong. This scenario proposes an alternative history for the development of this public housing, in which some floors of the public housing estate are developed differently.
