Where have all the ugly fruits gone? 奇形蔬果去了哪？

This project is to introduce and sell Ugly Fruits and veggies to organic food consumers. Ugly fruits are vegetables with non-standard shape, colour, size or appearance that have not met the standard requirements of the market. Customers mostly do not know of the existence of these “ugly” produces since they are filtered out, and often discarded before entering the market. Many consumers even have a fixed concept or image of how certain vegetable and fruit should look like and this explains the difficulty for the public to accept their unique appearances. In this project, I would like to cooperate with the organic farmers (Ka Kin Fruits Farm) to introduce Ugly Fruits to local consumers. By designing informative campaigns and promotions for these organic non-standard-shape produces, the project would reveal the nutrition value, natural characteristics, and the unsalable consequences of these non-standard produces. By repackaging these organic fruits and vegetables for sale, it is hope that consumers will be attracted to support local organic farmers at an individual level as well as to learn to avoid their wasteful bias to alleviate our food waste problem.

此習作向消費者介紹和銷售奇形蔬果。奇形蔬果是指外觀，形狀，顏色或大小都不符合批發商的標準而進不了市場的蔬果。許多消費者甚至從不知有這些非標準農產品的存在。消費者對於每種蔬果形狀的既定期望，亦導致公眾難以接受這類獨特外形蔬果的原因。它們在進入市場前已經被淘汰，被扔掉。在這個項目中，我與香港有機農夫（嘉健蔬果農場）合作，向消費者介紹奇形蔬果。透過資訊性的推廣和宣傳設計，期望向普羅消費者介紹奇形蔬果的營養價值、天然特性、以致對有機農民的好處，帶出不浪費和善待農產資源的信息。把奇形蔬果重新包裝銷售，去吸引消費者在個人層面購買奇形蔬果，支持本土有機農業之餘也減少食物浪費。
